Constitutionality of Washington’s exemption of nonprofit religious organizations from employment discrimination

Religious Freedoms

Ahrend Law PLLC filed an amicus curiae brief on behalf of the American Association of Christian Schools (www.aacs.org), the Association for Biblical Higher Education in Canada and the United States (www.abhe.org), and the Association of Classical Christian Schools (classicalchristian.org), supporting the constitutionality of Washington’s exemption of nonprofit religious organizations from employment discrimination lawsuits in Woods v. Seattle’s Union Gospel Mission.

The case involves a suit against Seattle’s Union Gospel Mission (SUGM) by a prospective employee claiming sexual orientation discrimination because he was not hired after he expressed his disagreement with SUGM’s statement of faith and standards of conduct as they pertain to traditional Christian sexual morality. The case will be argued before the Washington Supreme Court on October 10, 2019.
